DTE Energy is dedicated to constructing a smarter, stronger and more resilient grid to enhance reliability. Our commitment to customers is to reduce power outages by 30% and to cut outage durations in half by 2029.

As our efforts towards building a stronger grid continue, our crews are busy working on a major investment project in Pontiac, where hundreds of locations will be upgraded. This multi-year project in Pontiac, with an investment by DTE of more than $31 million, will improve the power quality and resiliency of the electric service in the area by reducing the frequency and duration of power outages. This project will also enhance public safety and increase the capacity of the grid to support the future of customers in the city of Pontiac.

Specifically, our crews were working recently at the corner of Osceola Drive and West Huron Street. The team installed new poles, new wire, transformers, cross arms, and connectors. Upgrades like the ones seen here are the standard for work happening across Pontiac. This work will be going on through the end of the year and starting in 2025, we will begin transferring our customers over to the newly, fully rebuilt electrical system. In areas that see a full grid rebuild like this one, customers experience a 90% improvement in reliability the first year after work is completed

These rebuilding projects are vital for reducing outages and increasing the grid’s resilience and reliability. By modernizing the grid like this, DTE is also preparing for future energy needs. Our commitment to these improvements guarantees that customers will continue to receive the reliable service they trust.

Rebuilding work is part of DTE’s plan to build the grid of the future. That plan, now well underway, includes transitioning to a smart grid, upgrading existing infrastructure, rebuilding significant portions of the grid and trimming trees.
