Gas construction crews install new, more durable pipes

Natural gas system upgrades: good for you and the environment

DTE is investing today to ensure we can continue to deliver the safe, reliable, and affordable natural gas you depend on for essential tasks like cooking, warming your shower and heating your home.

Replacing pipes and moving meters

The investment is part of the multi-year, $3.3 billion Gas Renewal Program (GRP) created to modernize the system that delivers natural gas to 1.3 million Michiganders. The project focuses on enhancing safety and reliability by:

  • replacing older cast iron and steel pipes with more durable and leak-resistant materials.
  • relocating indoor meters to the exterior of homes and businesses.

Enhancing safety and reliability, reducing emissions

The upgraded pipes enhance safety and reliability while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. By the time work is completed, 4,000 miles of pipes will be upgraded. This will reduce our annual greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 500,000 metric tons CO2e. That’s equivalent to taking 116,000 gasoline-powered vehicles off the road each year.

Outdoor meters promote safety and convenience

As we upgrade pipes, we’ll also move indoor meters outdoors for customers’ safety and convenience. Outdoor meters give technicians easier access for more frequent safety checks and maintenance. In an emergency inside the home, gas can be shut off from the outside to allow first responders to safely enter the property and perform their work.
