Since its inception in 2009, more than 3.8 million electric customers and 2.7 million gas customers have directly participated in DTE’s energy efficiency programs. In 2020, DTE was named the eighth ranked energy company in the US for its energy efficiency programs by the 2020 Utility Energy Efficiency Scorecard released by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE).

DTE offers more than 20 energy efficiency programs in total today across residential and business customers. On the residential side, new programs include solution-based (online marketplace and new home construction) and technology-based offerings through the smart meter (DTE Insight app) that empowers customers to manage their energy use through the innovative technology. Programs for low-income customers continue to grow including a recognition as the leading energy company in the U.S. for the offerings.

In 2018, DTE increased its energy savings target from 0.83 percent to 1.00 percent as part of its commitment to reduce customer energy waste. DTE is continuing its commitment to energy efficiency by maintaining its gas energy savings target of 1.00 percent through 2024, thus exceeding the minimum gas energy savings requirement.

Looking forward, DTE has undertaken strategic initiatives to diversify the program and identify promising emerging technologies to phase into the energy efficiency portfolio through 2024. Commercial & Industrial (C&I) programs will be of greater focus in the next five years. In addition, DTE will continue to focus on low-income programs. Lastly, DTE will continue to invest in emerging programs to make current programs as effective as possible for customers, develop new program designs, explore new approaches to most effectively serve the energy needs of our customers.

Business – DTE had assisted the Detroit automakers with energy management since 1994 by providing certified energy managers to work on-site with their engineering teams to save energy and reduce waste in their manufacturing processes. Over the last 20 years, DTE partnered with the University of Michigan through the Energy Partnership to apply continuous improvement practices to over 100 buildings on campus.

Residential – The energy efficiency residential portfolio has expanded to include an online ecommerce store, app with real-time energy use and low-income programs to support our customers in the current environment. The programs partner with local agencies to support the needs of our customers and work to provide simple, powerful solutions to reduce energy use and manage costs.
