DTE is committed to reducing power outages by 30% while cutting outage times in half by the end of 2029. As part of this commitment, we’re rebuilding the infrastructure and expanding the Swan Creek substation that powers Newport, Michigan.
Substations are a critical part of the electric grid, stepping down voltage so electricity can be delivered safely and efficiently to homes and businesses. Expanding the Swan Creek Substation will add capacity and strengthen reliability as energy demand continues to grow in the area.
This $37 million project, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2029, will improve the system’s overall reliability and better support the community’s long-term energy needs. Customers served by the upgraded equipment and substation will experience fewer and shorter outages, especially during storms.
What’s included in this project:
- Installing two new substation transformers, increasing capacity to nearly four times the current rating.
- Adding five new underground circuits, including nearly two miles of underground cable running east and west along Newport Road.
- Rebuilding 1.5 miles of poles, power lines and electrical equipment with stronger, more durable materials that can better withstand extreme weather.
- Trimming trees near power lines to prevent them from falling onto electrical equipment and causing outages.
- Installing smart grid devices that help quickly identify the location of damage during an outage. This allows crews to respond faster and, in some cases, reroute power to reduce the number of customers impacted while repairs are made.
- Connecting customers in the area to an upgraded electric substation that will help ensure power continues to be delivered safely and more reliably to homes and businesses.
Progress updates:
August 2026: This project includes upgrading the electric equipment that runs along Newport Road. To complete this work safely, Newport Road will close in segments. For the first segment, we’ll begin at the intersection of Newport and War Roads and progress eastbound toward Old Farm Lane from August 28 through December. Local access will be maintained, and flagging crews will be on site to direct traffic.
