This summer, DTE’s IMPACT program successfully completed its fifth year in providing pre-employment experiences and community engagement to 21 Cody High School students.

IMPACT, which stands for Individuals Making Positive Action for Communities Together, annually hosts Cody Rouge high school students, ages 14-18, for a six-week paid internship that blends career awareness with DTE culture, including service excellence, volunteerism, knowledge sharing and health and wellbeing.

Returning DTE retirees Roosevelt Banks, Vickey Griffin, Eddie Payne, and Deborah Tyler were supported by college peer mentors Sharde Ford and Kristin Thomas.

In addition to learning energy career opportunities, the group enjoyed weekly healthy living programming and completed three beautification projects for the upcoming school year: a new e-gaming room, flagpole touch-up, and outdoor enhancements, along with painting 18 school entrance doors.

Combined, DTE’s 2023 IMPACT program brought the company’s service culture, passion for volunteerism and dedication to communities to life for the Cody Rouge students.

Each student expressed a sense of ownership, pride, and confidence in being a part of positively contributing to their school in ways that would be enjoyed by their fellow students and the community.

DTE retirees volunteered six weeks across the summer to share their knowledge and offer mentorship to the IMPACT program's student participants.
