As Michigan faces more frequent extreme weather, it’s essential to have a smarter, stronger and resilient electric grid. In Ypsilanti, we’re strengthening our infrastructure to withstand whatever Mother Nature brings our way, so the lights stay on for our customers.

Last year, we began installing smart grid devices in Ypsilanti to limit power outages and get the power back on faster when outages do occur. Crews also installed new, stronger poles and electric equipment to protect against increasingly severe weather. These efforts, combined with milder weather conditions, led to nearly an 88% decrease in the time Ypsilanti customers were without power between 2023 and 2024.

We’re investing nearly $27 million to continue our work to build the grid of the future in Ypsilanti from 2025 through 2026. This year, DTE plans to do the following work:

  • Install additional smart devices to improve safety, speed restoration and reduce the number of outages.
  • Inspect and upgrade nearly 60 miles of power delivery equipment in Ypsilanti. As part of this work DTE plans to replace pole-top equipment and more than 380 poles to strengthen the grid against wind and storms.
  • Rebuild areas of the grid throughout the city. This important work involves replacing the equipment that delivers power to homes and businesses with all new poles, power lines and electric equipment to improve reliability. Rebuilding also increases the electric grid’s capacity to support growth and expand energy options like electric vehicles.
  • Trim more than 100 miles of trees in Ypsilanti to prevent them from falling onto electric equipment and causing power outages.

This work is part of our commitment to reducing the number and length of power outages. To stay informed about the ongoing infrastructure work in your area, visit the DTE Power Improvements Map or empoweringmichigan.com

Together, we are building a stronger, more reliable grid that will serve Ypsilanti well into the future.
