Apply now for a DTE Foundation Tree Planting Grant
A single tree can change a neighborhood. It cools a hot sidewalk, cleans the air, softens the effects of climate change and gives people a reason to gather. Plant enough of them, and you don’t just green a community; you strengthen it.
That’s the idea behind the DTE Foundation Tree Planting Grant Program, now open for applications. Communities across DTE Energy’s electric and natural gas service territory can apply for grants of up to $4,000 to plant trees in parks, near schools and along streets; growing their urban forests while steering clear of utility infrastructure. Up to $95,000 in total funding is available for this cycle.
The program, celebrating its 30th anniversary, began its first planting in 1996. Alongside the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and ReLeaf Michigan, the DTE Foundation has helped plant over 20 million trees and seedlings in 776 communities across the state, expanding tree canopy and deepening environmental stewardship one community at a time.
“Every tree planted represents an investment in the future of a community,” said Rodney Cole, president, DTE Foundation. “Together with our partners and local residents, we’re helping create greener, more beautiful neighborhoods while building spaces where people can gather, connect and grow.”
But this program is about more than putting trees in the ground. It gives local governments, nonprofits, schools and community organizations a hands-on role in shaping where they live and work. ReLeaf Michigan provides the technical know-how to make sure every tree is well chosen, well planted and set up to thrive for years to come.
Past projects have expanded canopy coverage, rallied volunteers, brightened neighborhoods and delivered lasting environmental benefits — proof of what community-driven solutions can achieve.
