We’re on a mission to build a smarter, stronger and more resilient power grid, so you have reliable power, no matter what Mother Nature brings to Michigan. That’s why we’re building the grid of the future in Wayne County.

Rebuilding significant portions of our grid is one way we’re updating our grid to provide safer, more reliable power for you. Upon completion, these projects are expected to improve reliability by up to 90% for the customers served by the new electrical equipment.

Here’s how we’re working to make your power more reliable.

  • We’re investing $57 million to build a new electric substation that will supply the expanding technology corridor in Northville Township and Plymouth. The new substation will support business growth in the area while also providing the additional power needed for advancements like electric cars and smart home systems.
  • We’re also upgrading the electric substation that powers southeast Dearborn and Detroit’s Claytown, Michigan-Martin and Springwells neighborhoods. This $21 million investment includes relocating and upgrading transformers, breakers, cabling and other equipment to make power more reliable and handle the increasing demand for electricity in the area.
  • We’re modernizing the infrastructure powering downtown Detroit and spending more than $1.2 billion to rebuild the electric infrastructure in the city.

Rebuilding significant portions of our grid is part of our plan to build the grid of the future, which also includes accelerating our transition to a smart grid, upgrading existing infrastructure, and trimming or removing trees
