With the heat of summer finally behind us, fall is the perfect time to tackle yard cleanup. Whether you’re clearing gutters, trimming hedges or prepping your yard for winter, DTE Energy wants to make sure you stay safe, especially around electricity.
Here are some life-saving tips to keep in mind:
- Look up before you climb. Always check for overhead power lines before using ladders or accessing your roof to clean gutters. Stay at least 25 feet away from any power lines. If you or your contractor rent a lift, ensure everyone is far from overhead power lines.
- Keep your distance. Maintain a safe buffer (25 feet) between ladders, tools and overhead wires. Carry long objects horizontally to avoid accidental contact, which can result in injury or death.
- Know your electric service line. The line from your home to the utility pole may hang lower than others but carries high voltage. Never touch it — always locate it and stay clear of it before using ladders, climbing or moving equipment.
- Don’t work alone. Always have someone nearby to help spot electrical hazards and respond in case of emergency.
- Call before you dig. Call 811 to have underground utilities marked before starting any digging project.
- Remind contractors to stay safe. If you hire contractors to assist with fall clean up, please remind them to follow these safety tips, too.
- After storms, wait. If you see downed lines or debris near power lines, stay at least 25 feet away — about the length of a school bus — and report it immediately.
