“What this neighborhood needed was a nice haircut,” said Steve, a resident of Brightmoor neighborhood in Detroit.

He is pictured above standing beside an alley near Dacosta and Schoolcraft streets. This area used to be filled with overgrown trees that frequently got tangled up with overhead power lines during heavy winds. This can create a safety hazard, as well as an unstable power connection for nearby homes and businesses.

Arborists recently increased their tree trimming efforts in this area. Our team safely and efficiently scaled multiple trees to remove branches growing dangerously close to DTE infrastructure.

“They were like Spiderman climbing up those trees,” Steve exclaimed. “I’m happy to see progress.”

The more tree limbs are cleared away from overhead power lines, the more electrical reliability improves. Tree trimming maintenance reduces the chances of power outages caused by inclement weather, helping keep power flowing all year long for this Detroiter’s neighborhood.

In late 2021, DTE made a $90 million investment to accelerate tree trimming efforts across the communities it serves, helping prevent outages during heavy storms.

Highlights include:

  • Accelerating tree trimming work for communities hardest hit by storms last fall
  • Increasing our tree trim workforce by 30%
  • Trimming 5,700 miles of trees near power lines — more than the distance from Detroit to Hawaii — in the last year alone

If trees are creating a safety hazard near your home, please report it to DTE here. We prioritize safety concerns based on the severity of the hazard.
