DTE Energy is committed to building a stronger, more reliable electric grid for our customers. As part of that commitment, the company is investing $20 million to upgrade the substation that delivers power to more than 12,000 homes and businesses in Madison Heights.

The work includes expanding the electric substation by adding new, updated equipment. The new equipment will help us continue to deliver power safely and more reliably to customers. Some of the equipment will also add backup support to the power grid. This means if one part goes down, another can step in — helping keep your lights on, even during unexpected issues.

Project progress:

  • 2025: Crews are working to set up the above ground equipment. Later this summer, they will install underground cables.
  • 2024: Crews completed majority of the underground work, including installing new underground conduit, building new manholes and constructing platforms for large equipment.

DTE started construction on this project in 2024 and expects to finish it by spring 2027.

These system upgrades for Madison Heights customers are part of DTE’s plan to build the grid of the future, which also includes transitioning to a smart grid, upgrading existing infrastructure, rebuilding significant portions of the grid and trimming trees. These improvements will help the company reach its goal of reducing outages by 30% while cutting outage times in half by 2029.
