Each year on Earth Day, communities around the world come together to celebrate the planet and recommit to protecting it. At DTE’s Beacon Park, sustainability isn’t limited to one day on the calendar; it’s built into how the venue operates, how it connects people to the region and how it supports a healthier, greener downtown Detroit.
From thoughtful design features to everyday practices, Beacon Park continues to advance environmentally responsible, accessible and eco-friendly solutions that help reduce environmental impact while creating a welcoming public space for all.

Designing with the Environment in Mind
Beacon Park actively engages in environmental stewardship through the venue’s onsite assets and green infrastructure. In 2025, those efforts added up to meaningful impact:
- Park visitors and guests at Lumen Detroit helped recycle 1.41 tons of waste, reducing material sent to landfills.
- 41 trees onsite capture an estimated 1,500 pounds of carbon dioxide each year, supporting cleaner air and urban cooling.
- Four bioswales help filter pollutants and manage stormwater runoff, protecting nearby waterways.
- Native plants and greenery create a biodiverse habitat and bee sanctuary, supporting pollinators essential to a healthy ecosystem.
- Four recycling stations throughout the park make it easy for visitors to dispose of waste responsibly.
Together, these features demonstrate how intentional design, everyday practices and community participation can make a real environmental difference.
Supporting Cleaner Mobility
Earth Day is also a reminder that how we move through our cities matters. Beacon Park’s central location and connectivity help reduce reliance on personal vehicles while making downtown destinations more accessible:
- The park is located near two bus lines, connecting visitors to major attractions across the city.
- A 10‑minute walk puts visitors at the QLINE, bike stations and the Rosa Parks Transit Center.
- More than 20 bike racks and protected bike lanes are available onsite and nearby, supporting cycling as a clean transportation option.
- Electric vehicle charging stations nearby encourage the use of low emission vehicles.
With major downtown destinations just a short walk away, Beacon Park helps make sustainable transportation a practical everyday choice.
