DTE Energy understands how important reliable electricity is for Groveland Township residents. That’s why the company is making major investments and upgrades to improve electric service and reduce outages for more than 8,000 customers in the area.

DTE plans to invest around $10 million to execute the following improvements, which began in 2025:

  • Installing smart grid devices to help identify where damage is, so crews can arrive on site faster to make repairs. Smart devices can also reroute power to many customers, so their lights are on while crews make repairs.
  • Completely rebuilding portions of the electric grid in the area, including replacing all the poles, wires and transformers that deliver power to homes and businesses in areas of Groveland Township.
  • Adding new equipment to the electric substation that powers Groveland Township. The new equipment will ensure power continues to be delivered to customers safely and reliably.
  • Trimming trees and branches away from electrical equipment. This is a foundational step to improving electric service since half of all outages are caused by trees damaging electric equipment.
Our progress
  • So far this year, crews have installed smart devices on the grid in Groveland Township. DTE plans to install more smart devices over the next few years to fully automate the grid in this area. This will reduce the number and length of outages in the area.
  • Crews are inspecting the overhead infrastructure in the area and are making upgrades to poles and equipment at hundreds of locations.
  • DTE’s tree crews have trimmed more than 40 miles of trees in Groveland Township since March. The company plans to trim nearly 190 miles of trees across Atlas Township, Brandon Township, Groveland Township, Hadley Township and the Village of Ortonville.

All these efforts support DTE’s commitment to reduce outages by 30% and cut outage time in half by 2029. DTE is investing in Groveland Township to make sure electricity is reliable, now and in the future.
