DTE is determined to build a stronger grid, and our crews have been busy out in the field to make this goal a reality.

At the corner of Russell Street and Ferry Street in Detroit’s Poletown East, our crews have begun work to heavily rebuild the older electric service that is currently there. This work will bring many new poles and pole top upgrades to the area to provide more reliable service to our customers in the area. In this neighborhood alone, over 40 poles are being upgraded and when the new poles are set, new wire will round out the upgrades to the pole tops. Along with the new poles being installed, underground service equipment is also being upgraded. These improvements will result in better performance, especially during extreme weather situations.

This is part of a second major Midtown area project that began in 2020. DTE is investing an additional $200 million to help rebuild 60 miles of electric infrastructure in the immediate area on both sides of I-75. In 2030, when the project is completed, nearly 4,500 customers will be receiving their power from three new and modernized substations.

Rebuilding infrastructure is crucial for reducing outages and strengthening grid resilience. DTE is updating its equipment to address future energy needs, ensuring reliable and consistent service for its customers.

DTE Energy is dedicated to constructing a smarter, stronger and more resilient grid to enhance reliability. Our commitment to customers is to reduce power outages by 30% and to cut outage durations in half by the end of 2029.

Rebuilding work like this is part of DTE’s plan to build the grid of the future. That plan, now well underway, also includes transitioning to a smart grid, upgrading existing infrastructure and trimming trees.
