By 2023, all of General Motors’ Southeast Michigan facilities will be powered with solar and wind energy – thanks to DTE’s MIGreenPower program. The iconic automotive company has made the largest clean energy purchase in the state, announcing it will purchase another 500,000 MWh in DTE’s MIGreenPower program, bringing its total investment to approximately 840,000 MWh.

DTE will source this incremental MIGreenPower investment from two solar parks currently under development, while GM’s initial investment is supporting the construction of three new wind parks. Two of the wind parks are in mid-Michigan and will be Michigan’s largest upon operation, and the third wind park is being constructed in the Upper Peninsula.

GM’s investment in MIGreenPower will deliver enough clean energy to supply GM’s Southeast Michigan facilities, including the Renaissance Center global headquarters in Detroit, the GM Global Technical Center in Warren, the Milford Proving Ground in Milford and two local assembly plants; Orion and Detroit-Hamtramck, as well as several smaller GM sites across Southeast Michigan. GM’s Orion and Detroit-Hamtramck plants build electric vehicles, including the Chevrolet Bolt EV and GMC Hummer EV.

“DTE is proud to continue our partnership with General Motors as we facilitate their expansive clean energy commitments,” said Brian Calka, director of Renewable Energy Solutions at DTE Energy. “DTE received approval for our MIGreenPower large customer program in January of last year, and it has seen tremendous enrollment and success. We encourage all of our customers, business and residential alike, to sign up for MIGreenPower and help develop more Michigan-made renewable energy.”

Growing MIGreenPower participation not only helps Michigan businesses deliver on their sustainability goals, it is a key part of DTE’s strategy to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050. Customers who match their electricity use to DTE’s utility-scale wind and solar projects through MIGreenPower increase the amount of renewable energy DTE can build and assist in increasing access to our clean energy projects.

These renewable energy projects are not only good for our customers and the environment, but also serve as a value add for Michigan’s economy. GM’s total investment in MIGreenPower will support approximately 1,500 clean energy jobs in Michigan during the projects’ construction period

“Together, we’re strengthening Michigan’s clean energy economy and protecting our planet for future generations,” said Calka.

MIGreenPower is open to all DTE electric customers interested in reducing their carbon footprint. To learn more or enroll, visit migreenpower.com or call 855.613.4445.
