As DTE continues building a stronger grid, our crews have been at work in Detroit to make some generational improvements to the underground power system.

At the corner of Hancock Street and Cass Avenue our crews have been busy replacing the underground cable, to be more modern, safe and reliable.

This work in the lower Midtown area is part of our $200 million investment to rebuild the grid in this area of the city for customers. This rebuild will significantly improve the overall performance of the grid for years to come, making it more dependable and efficient.

The project involves installing 11 miles of upgraded underground piping, known as conduit, along with new cables inside that piping; Rebuilding and upgrading 12 miles of overhead electrical equipment such as poles and power lines and upgrading manholes; And installing over 40 new transformers and replacing the old substation with a new, modern, and more efficient one.

Strengthening our infrastructure is essential to reducing outages and boosting grid resilience. By investing in innovative technologies, we are positioned to meet future energy demands and deliver consistent, reliable service to our customers.

DTE Energy is dedicated to constructing a smarter, stronger and more resilient grid to enhance reliability. Our commitment to customers is to reduce power outages by 30% and to cut outage durations in half by the end of 2029.

Rebuilding work is part of DTE’s plan to build the grid of the future. That plan, now well underway, includes transitioning to a smart grid, upgrading existing infrastructure, rebuilding significant portions of the grid and trimming trees.
