As we continue building towards a stronger grid, DTE Energy crews have been tasked with installing new smart grid technology in Dearborn.
At the corner of Penn Street and Bailey Street, our crews recently installed a brand-new Viper Recloser, and more will be coming to this area. The purpose of this piece of the smart grid is to speed up outage restoration times and make that process safer for everyone.
When an outage occurs, the device, located on the pole top, will identify where the problem is and isolate that portion of the grid, keeping more customers energized while our crews work on fixing the issue.
This is not only safer for our customers and crews, but it reduces the restoration time by giving our crews the information they need to swiftly know the right course of action needed to solve nearly any issue.
Automation work like this is happening all over our service area and helping to improve the performance of the grid overall. These upgrades of every kind will especially be noticed during extreme weather situations. We will have all of our electric grid automated by 2029.
DTE Energy is dedicated to constructing a smarter, stronger and more resilient grid to enhance reliability. Our commitment to customers is to reduce power outages by 30% and to cut outage durations in half by 2029.
Smart grid installations are part of DTE’s plan to build the grid of the future. That plan, now well underway, includes transitioning to a smart grid, upgrading existing infrastructure, rebuilding significant portions of the grid and trimming trees.
