Home improvement projects can be exciting and rewarding, but they can also require some additional safety steps. One of the most important aspects of any renovation is ensuring your electric and natural gas service can safely handle any potential increase in demand.

These home improvements that may require an energy service upgrade:

Additions and extensions

If you are planning to add more square footage to your home, such as a new bedroom, bathroom or garage, you will likely need to upgrade your electric and natural gas service. This is because the existing wiring and piping may not be sufficient to supply the additional outlets, fixtures, appliances and heating and cooling. You may also need to install new natural gas or electric meters, circuit breakers or valves to accommodate the increased load and prevent overloading or leaks.

Whole home generator

Are you considering installing a natural gas-fueled whole home generator? Before you invest in a generator, you should consider how it will affect your natural gas service.

A whole home generator typically runs on natural gas or propane fuel, which means it may consume large amounts of gas or propane while operating. Depending on the size and capacity of your generator, you may need to upgrade your natural gas meter, propane tank and/or service line to ensure there is enough supply to meet the demand of both your generator and your existing gas appliances. (Please note all propane fuel tanks should remain outside your home for your safety.)

 Outdoor improvements

Outdoor improvements may also require service upgrades. If your improvements involve adding new electric or natural gas equipment such as lighting, outlets, pumps, heaters, jacuzzi hot tubs, fire pits or a natural gas grill your increased demand could pose a fire or explosion hazard if your electric or natural gas systems aren’t properly upgraded

Also remember to call MISS DIG at 811 at least three business days before starting any digging to avoid any accidents or injuries. This free service is required by law and will bring natural gas, cable, water and other providers to your home or business to locate and mark underground lines for you.

Tankless water heater

Another home improvement that may require an energy service upgrade is installing a tankless water heater. A tankless water heater provides hot water on demand by heating the water as it flows through a pipe. This appliance can save energy and water, but it also requires a higher water flow rate and pressure of natural gas or electricity than a conventional water heater needs.

If your existing service is not sufficient to support a tankless water heater, you may experience low water pressure, inconsistent temperature or equipment malfunction.
