DTE Energy is working in communities throughout Michigan to upgrade the infrastructure that delivers safe and reliable natural gas to customers. As part of a 25-year Gas Renewal Program (GRP), crews are replacing steel and cast-iron pipes with more efficient, durable and environmentally friendly materials.
As we replace approximately 200 miles of pipe each year, we’re also moving indoor meters outdoors for customers’ safety and convenience.
DTE’s investment in its natural gas infrastructure also offers these benefits:
- Reduces leaks and greenhouse gas emissions. When upgrades are completed in 2035, we will have reduced emissions statewide by an estimated 500,000 metric tons on an annual basis – the equivalent of permanently taking 100,000 cars off the road.
- Provides technicians with easier access to meters so they can perform more frequent safety checks and maintenance – without having to enter a property. Also, in an emergency inside the home, gas can be shut off from outside to allow first responders to safely enter the property and perform their work.
