DTE Energy crews were hard at work recently on East William Street in downtown Ann Arbor as they replaced a transformer, installed new poles and helped a construction site get ready to bring in a crane to help the city continue to grow.

Much of this work is part of DTE’s commitment to constructing a smarter, stronger and more resilient grid to enhance reliability. DTE has committed to reduce power outages by 30% and to cut outage durations in half by 2029.

The upgraded transformer will directly support residents in both this neighborhood and in the wider area, as it is a key piece of the underground electric grid. The replaced pole will help keep the grid withstand the increasingly powerful storms that hit southeastern Michigan communities every year, helping customers see a noticeable increase in electric performance.

Infrastructure improvements like these are critical to DTE’s mission of reducing outages and enhancing the grid’s resilience and reliability. Through equipment modernization, DTE is fortifying the existing system and positioning it to meet future electricity demands.

Upgrading work is part of DTE’s plan to build the grid of the future. That plan, now well underway, includes transitioning to a smart grid, upgrading existing infrastructure, rebuilding significant portions of the grid and trimming trees.
