As the city of Detroit continues to grow and evolve, it’s vital that residents and businesses have the reliable power they need and deserve. That’s why DTE Energy is building the grid of the future right here in the city, including an investment of $80 million to rebuild 25 miles of infrastructure in Detroit’s Brewster Homes, Brush Park, Douglas and southern Midtown neighborhoods from 2019 to 2025.
This means all new power lines, conduit, transformers and other electrical equipment that deliver power to customers. The work is nearly finished and will result in better power quality. It will also add capacity to the grid, supporting the area’s anticipated growth and accommodating demand for electric energy options, such as electric vehicles.
The final step in completing this project will be connecting customers to the new system.
What to expect
- A brief power interruption is necessary to safely connect customers. The first of two power interruptions is planned to take place on Sunday, Sept. 29, for two hours beginning at 7 a.m.
- Some traffic signals and streetlights will be impacted by the outage — please exercise caution during this time.
- Impacted customers will receive letters, emails and phone calls.
- The second power interruption will take place in 2025. We will communicate with customers prior to this short, planned outage.
We understand that any outage can be an inconvenience, and we appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to improve electric service.
Looking forward
The completion of this project marks a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to provide more reliable service. But we’re not done. To help us achieve our commitment to reducing power outages by 30% while cutting outage times in half by 2029, we’re transitioning to a smart grid, rebuilding significant portions of the grid, upgrading existing infrastructure and trimming trees. All this work is taking place right here in the city of Detroit and will help us build a smarter, stronger and more resilient grid of the future.
