When Marzuq S. first heard about DTE Energy’s Energy Efficiency Academy, it wasn’t from a flyer or an ad—it was through family. A few of his relatives had jobs with DTE, and after seeing how those opportunities helped them build careers, he decided to explore it for himself.

“I’ve always been good with my hands—carpentry was something I really enjoyed,” said Marzuq S., a graduate of the Energy Efficiency Academy. “But I wanted to take it further and learn how homes work from the inside out. That’s the insight the Academy gave me.”

The Academy, launched by DTE in partnership with Walker-Miller Energy Services, offers a paid, seven-week, hands-on training program designed to open doors to careers in the clean energy industry. Marzuq was one of 15 participants to complete the training, which concluded with a graduation ceremony held at Walker-Miller Energy Services earlier this month. Since launching in 2023, 90% of eligible graduates have found jobs—many with contractors that support DTE’s energy efficiency programs.

Whether participants are brand new to the trades or looking to enhance their skills, the Academy equips them with real-world job experience, mentorship, and nationally recognized certifications in areas like insulation, HVAC, home performance, and electrical work.

For Marzuq, the training has been eye-opening.

“I’ve learned how to analyze how a home uses energy and how to stop the spread of lead dust in older houses with lead paint,” he said. “You start to understand all the different systems that make a home run and how to make them safer and more efficient.”

Marzuq says the program challenges you in the best way—pushing you to think critically, work hard, and problem-solve on the spot.

“You’re not just sitting in a classroom,” he said. “You’re out there in real homes, working with professionals, getting your hands dirty, and learning by doing.”

As these graduates set their sights on a new career pathway in the clean energy space, the Academy is proof that Detroiters are ready to lead the clean energy transition when given the opportunity. The Academy is not just a training program; it’s a launchpad for life-changing careers.

“I didn’t know a program like this existed,” he said. “Now I’m gaining skills, making connections, and setting myself up for a solid career.”

With training sites in metro Detroit and West Michigan, the Energy Efficiency Academy is building a pipeline of clean energy professionals ready to make homes across Michigan safer, more efficient, and more affordable.

“If you’re hands-on and like helping people, this is a great opportunity,” Marzuq said. “I’m proud to be part of it.”
