On a sunny winter’s day in Royal Oak, a quiet transformation is underway. Crews are diligently working to enhance the reliability of the power grid, ensuring that local homes continue to receive uninterrupted electricity. One such project is taking place on Lloyd Street, where an aging and weathered pole is being replaced with a new, sturdier pole.

Secondary or often referred to as step-down poles, play a crucial role in the distribution of electricity. These poles connect to the transformer poles and carry power to individual homes and businesses. Over time, exposure to the elements takes a toll on these poles. Cracks, decay, and weakening structural integrity become evident, compromising their reliability.

DTE crews identified an aging pole on Lloyd Street that required immediate attention. Its replacement is essential to maintain a robust electrical grid. The linemen skillfully transfer wires from the old poles to the new ones, ensuring a seamless transition.

In addition to pole replacements, secondary underground work is part of this comprehensive project. DTE is burying some secondary lines, enhancing their protection against weather-related damage. Underground lines are less susceptible to falling branches, ice accumulation, and other external factors.

Upgrades like this are part of our work to build the grid of the future. As a key portion of this transformation, we’re transitioning to a smart grid, updating existing infrastructure, rebuilding older sections of the grid and trimming trees.

We know how important it is to keep the energy flowing to our residential and business customers. DTE Energy’s commitment to reliability ensures that Royal Oak remains a vibrant and resilient city. You can see what we are working on next by using our electric reliability improvements map.
