Funding supports shelters across Michigan offering emergency refuge and trauma-informed care

Detroit, Mich. — Domestic violence shelters across Michigan will receive additional funding for programmatic needs thanks to a continued partnership between the DTE Foundation and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS). The funding will help ensure survivors of domestic and intimate partner violence have access to safe shelter, crisis support and healing-centered services.

Shelters supported through MDHHS’s Division of Victim Services serve thousands of individuals and families each year, offering 24/7 crisis lines, legal advocacy and trauma-informed care. In 2024 alone, programs funded by the DTE Foundation answered 65,000 crisis calls and provided more than 307,000 nights of emergency shelter—a 34 percent increase since 2020.

“Every survivor deserves safety, dignity and the opportunity to heal,” said Rodney Cole, president, DTE Foundation. “We are honored to stand alongside MDHHS and the incredible advocates across Michigan who make that possible every day. This funding reflects our deep commitment to our communities and ensuring no one walks the path to healing alone.”

As federal and state funding becomes increasingly constrained, the Foundation’s continued support is essential. This investment ensures uninterrupted access to shelter and crisis services, affirms the dignity and healing of survivors and strengthens Michigan’s community infrastructure for vulnerable families.

“Michigan’s domestic violence organizations provide a wide range of lifesaving services for victims and their families, including counseling, immediate crisis support, legal advocacy and emergency housing,” said Elizabeth Hertel, director, MDHHS. “When we strengthen these services, we send a powerful message that everyone deserves to live free from abuse and that no one has to face that journey alone. We thank the DTE Foundation for once again supporting the programs that make these critical services a reality.”

The partnership reflects a shared commitment to ensuring that survivors—regardless of where they live—can find safety, support and a path forward.
