As temperatures drop, heating systems activate, days shorten and lights stay on longer, leading to higher energy use and bills. DTE Energy wants you to know there are ways to manage your energy use and keep costs in check.

  • Dress appropriately – dress for the weather by pulling out those cozy socks and sweaters. On cold winter nights put an extra blanket on the bed and lower your thermostat another degree or two to save even more.
  • Keep the air flowing – Make sure rugs, drapes, or furniture do not block airflow from registers, this will improve efficiency and comfort.
  • Take advantage of Mother Nature – Open blinds and curtains on sunny days to use the heat from the sun to naturally warm up your house. At night, close them to reduce drafts and keep heat in.
  • Seal air leaks and add insulation as needed – This can save you up to 10% on your annual energy bills. Low-cost, clear plastic window sheeting can be installed over leaking windows to keep cold air out. The plastic must be sealed tightly to the frame to help reduce infiltration.
  • Clean or replace filtersDirty filters block airflow, causing your furnace and central air conditioning to work harder. Clean or replace furnace and air filters regularly – at least every three months.
  • Install a programmable thermostatDuring the winter, set your thermostat to 68°F during the day and at night or while you are away, turn it down a few degrees to help you save up to 10% annually on energy costs.
  • Power up with LED lightingLED light bulbs are more efficient, durable and last up to 15 times longer than incandescent bulbs. They use up to 90% less energy while providing the same amount of light.
