Low-income families in Michigan can get help paying for some of their heating expenses. If you live at or below 110% of the Federal Poverty Level, you may be eligible for a Home Heating Tax Credit for the 2023 tax year to help pay winter heating bills.

To qualify for the tax credit, submit the form when you file your Michigan Individual Income Tax MI-1040. If you aren’t required to file an MI-1040, submit the Home Heating Credit form no later Sept. 30, 2024. If you are approved and receive an energy draft, you’ll need to return it with a postmark no later than December 14, 2024, to make sure you receive your full credit. Click here for home heating credit information and forms, and to view a detailed checklist to see if you’re eligible for assistance.

If you’re interested in filing for the Home Heating Tax Credit, contact the Accounting Aid Society at 866-673-0873 or 313-556-1920. Their team will be able to help you complete necessary forms and calculate your heating costs.
