As DTE Energy efforts towards building a stronger grid continue, our crews have recently broken ground on a new project in Canton. At the corner of Sheldon Road and Cranberry Drive, over 20 new steel power poles are being installed to strengthen the service in the area.

These poles are much more durable than their wooden counterparts not just because of the material they’re made of, but also because the poles are taller overall and are buried deeper into the ground to ensure that they are as sturdy as possible. The crews were also installing brand new pole top gear and transferring service from the old poles to the new ones. Upgrades like this will widely increase the performance of the equipment in the area and that will be apparent during extreme weather situations.

Infrastructure upgrades are key to reducing outages and enhancing the grid’s resilience and reliability. By upgrading our equipment, DTE is reinforcing the system and preparing it to meet future energy needs. Our commitment to these improvements guarantees that customers will continue to receive the dependable service they expect.

DTE Energy is dedicated to constructing a smarter, stronger and more resilient grid to enhance reliability. Our commitment to customers is to reduce power outages by 30% and to cut outage durations in half by 2029.

Upgrading work is part of DTE’s plan to build the grid of the future. That plan, now well underway, includes transitioning to a smart grid, upgrading existing infrastructure, rebuilding significant portions of the grid and trimming trees.
