June is National Safety Month! That makes it the perfect time for Michigan families to check in on a few simple habits to help keep your home safe year-round.
When it comes to natural gas, remember three important basics: recognizing a gas leak and what to do next, preventing carbon monoxide (CO) risks and always calling MISS DIG at 811 before any digging project.
1) Gas leaks: know the signs and get to safety. Natural gas is odorized to smell like rotten eggs. You might also hear hissing or see dirt blowing, bubbling water or dead vegetation. If you suspect a leak, leave immediately. Once you’re somewhere safe, call 911, then DTE’s Gas Leak Hotline at 800-947-5000. It’s a free service for customers, 24/7
2) Carbon monoxide (CO): protect your home with detectors. CO is invisible and odorless, and symptoms can feel much like the flu (headache, dizziness, nausea). Install CO alarms on every level and near sleeping areas, testing them regularly. If an alarm sounds or you feel any symptoms, get outside to fresh air at one and call 911.
3) MISS DIG 811: Can you dig it? You may already have summer projects in mind, like planting a tree, installing a fence, or even small landscaping jobs. But before you dig, contact MISS DIG at 811 at least three business days ahead so underground utility lines can be marked. This improves safe digging and helps avoid costly repairs. It’s free, it’s fast and it’s the law!
