Westland is getting more reliable power, thanks to a major investment by DTE Energy in partnership with the city. Last year, DTE upgraded and modernized electric infrastructure throughout the city. This work, combined with less extreme weather, resulted in an 85% improvement in the time spent without power for customers in Westland from 2023 to 2024.
“It’s important to me that organizations work together to improve the quality of life for our residents in Westland, and reliable power is a critical part of that,” said Westland Mayor Kevin Coleman. “DTE has stepped up in a big way to help us turn things around. We’ve seen fewer outages for shorter durations and our community is taking notice.” DTE is continuing this work to improve reliability in 2025 — the company plans to inspect and upgrade nearly 100 miles of electric equipment that delivers power to Westland, including installing more than 700 new poles. DTE is also trimming more than 90 miles of trees along the power lines that serve the city this year.
Additionally, DTE is installing more than 20 smart devices that de-energize downed lines, speed up repairs and reroute electricity to many customers during outages — so fewer homes and businesses are left without power. By 2025, 35% of the city’s grid will be automated.
It’s all part of DTE’s plan to reduce the number and length of power outages across the communities it serves.
For Westland, these upgrades aren’t just about keeping the lights on — they’re about ensuring a stronger, more resilient future. With fewer disruptions, local businesses can operate more efficiently, families can count on consistent service and the city can continue to grow with confidence.
“As we move forward, we’re not just focused on today’s needs — we’re thinking about the future, too,” said Mayor Coleman. “With DTE at the table, we can continue building a stronger, more resilient Westland.”
