As part of DTE Energy’s plan to build the grid of the future, we are rebuilding the electric infrastructure that delivers power to southwest Ann Arbor.

This project, which DTE began in May and expects to complete by the end of 2025, represents an investment of more than $3.7 million and includes:

  • Rebuilding electric infrastructure: Over four miles of electric infrastructure — including power lines, transformers, more than 180 electric poles and other essential equipment — will be completely rebuilt. The newly installed equipment is stronger and can better withstand extreme weather.
  • Tree trimming: Trimming or removing trees prevents them from falling onto electric equipment and causing power outages.
  • Connecting customers to the new electric system: Customers within the project area (see map below) will be connected to an upgraded electric substation. The upgraded substation will help ensure electricity continues to be delivered safely and more reliably to homes and businesses, as electric demand continues to grow.

Upon completion, this work is expected to improve reliability by up to 90% for more than 400 customers served by the upgraded substation and new equipment. The project will also improve safety and the electric grid’s capacity to meet the area’s growing energy needs. This means the system will be able to support new businesses and more electric vehicles and appliances.

Project Progress:

May 2025: Crews are actively trimming trees along the power lines. This essential step not only prepares the area for the installation of new infrastructure, but it also enhances electric service reliability. Crews have also started rebuilding electric equipment, including installing new poles, power lines and transformers.

Throughout the project, short outages and lane closures may be necessary to safely complete the work. We will notify customers of outages when possible.

This project is part of DTE’s plan to invest $360 million to upgrade and rebuild Ann Arbor’s electric grid. You can learn more about work happening in your community at dteenergy.com/powermap.
