Time and again, wind technicians based out of our Huron Renewable Energy Center have stepped up to volunteer at the nearby Huron County Nature Center. Their volunteer projects have included constructing a new entrance ramp for the visitor center, building a trail boardwalk, clearing out the pollinator garden, repairing a waterfall, and installing fencing for the new children’s nature play area.

“It’s a win-win for the nature center and for our team,” said Andrew Johnson, manager, Renewable Energy Operations. “This is a place we don’t ever struggle to get volunteers. Our team loved supporting these projects, and they did an outstanding job. We’ve received a lot of compliments on how nice and professional our work looks, and they’ve asked us to come back and do even more.”

The Huron County Nature Center’s goal is to preserve the natural environment for the enjoyment and education of the public. In similar fashion, our Huron Renewable Energy Center team members help protect our environment by operating and maintaining the five wind parks DTE has in Huron County.

“The DTE volunteers have been absolutely fantastic for us,” said Jim Warchall, Huron County Nature Center Board President. “I volunteer with various organizations, but the nature center is my real passion. It’s just a great group of people…I get a lot of enjoyment out of it because we get so many visitors, people who are happy to be there, and that’s the reward – all the work is worth it.”
