At DTE Energy, we know how important reliable power is for our customers. That’s why we’re committed to increasing reliability by 30% and cutting outage time in half by 2029. Two communities that will benefit from these improvements are Webberville and Williamston.
Through our rebuilding work, customers in these areas will see an expected 90% improvement in their electric reliability when served by the upgraded substation and equipment. In addition to more reliable power, the work will also add capacity to the grid. This will support growth and expand electric energy options like electric vehicles.
From 2023 to 2025, we’re investing almost $20 million to rebuild the equipment that brings electricity to homes and businesses around Williamston and Webberville. This work includes upgrading more than 13 miles of power lines, poles, transformers and electrical equipment and trimming trees growing close to power lines.
PROJECT PROGRESS
We have completed the first of three parts of this project.
Part 1: Completed
June 2023 – November 2023: Installed more than four miles of new poles, power lines and transformers near I-96, along M-52/Stockbridge and Noble Roads.
December 2023: Connected customers in this area to the new electrical system.
Part 2: Underway
May 2024 – December 2024: Upgrading over seven miles of poles, power lines and transformers in Williamston along M-43/East Grand River Avenue and Dietz Road.
Once the upgrades are complete later this year, we will connect customers to the new power system.
Part 3: Next
We will extend these upgrades along about two miles of M-43/East Grand River Avenue in Webberville through 2025.
Throughout the project, short power outages and partial road closures will be necessary to safely complete the work. We will continue to notify customers in the area if work affects them. Learn more about what to expect when DTE is installing a new electric power system in your neighborhood.
This work is part of our plan to build the grid of the future, which includes transitioning to a smart grid, upgrading existing infrastructure, rebuilding significant portions of the grid and trimming trees.
