Clean clothes contribute more than comfort – they foster a sense of dignity and self-worth, which everyone deserves.

That’s what the new washing machine – donated by DTE Energy – at the Shelter Association of Washtenaw County is offering for the people who use their services.

“The washer that was generously donated is available not only to our shelter clients but also to any member of the community who is struggling financially ,” said Sarah Paspal-Jasinski, development director at the shelter. “Clean clothing is about more than appearance it’s tied to dignity, employment, personal hygiene and overall well-being. The impact of having access to clean clothes is both immediate and long-lasting.”

When Molly Luempert-Coy, regional manager in Corporate and Government Affairs at DTE, learned that the shelter typically offered laundry care for clients but its washing machine had stopped working, she wanted to help. Building on a history of support between the company and the shelter, her team worked with others within DTE to raise $1,000 so the shelter could purchase an industrial-sized washing machine that would suit their clients’ daily needs.

“We have a wonderful long-term partnership with the Shelter Association,” said Luempert-Coy. “DTE is a large employer and business partner in Ann Arbor. Our employees, live, work and volunteer in the communities we serve.  In this case, we are helping our most vulnerable customers by providing real, tangible support.”

Both DTE and the DTE Energy Foundation have been partners with the shelter, with HJ Decker, vice president of Gas Sales and Supply, serving on the organization’s board of directors. Both entities are focused on serving community where it’s needed most by providing sleeping bags and coats, coordinating shelter support during major storms, working closely in 2023 during a record 100-year ice storm and night of seven tornadoes and sponsoring the Homeless Awareness month program.

It’s a relationship that has made all the difference for shelter.

“Having a partner like DTE is an invaluable resource,” said Paspal-Jasinski. “Their deep roots in this community and commitment to human services make them more than just a supporter they’re a true ally in our mission. DTE understands the complex needs of the population we serve and actively works to improve the Social Determinants of Health that impact our clients’ ability to thrive.”

From regular partnership to support with things like the washing machine, it’s all part of DTE’s mission to empower the people and places it serves.

“DTE aspires to be a good corporate citizen in Michigan,” said Luempert-Coy. “In Ann Arbor, our employees serve on many charitable boards, we volunteer thousands of hours for numerous causes and support through a variety of philanthropic efforts. DTE prides itself on supporting the communities we serve and lending a helping hand through volunteerism and generosity.”
