The frigid temperatures are here, Michiganders! Are you visiting your family cottage to enjoy some winter fun soon? Consider implementing these safety and energy efficiency tips during your adventurous long weekends

Safety First

  • Do a carbon monoxide safety check. And check the batteries of your detectors to make sure they’re working.
  • Inspect flues, vents & chimneys for any blockages.
  • Ensure your gas meter is clear of debris and obstructions.
  • If you detect a gas leak call 911 and then DTE at 800.947.5000.

Efficiency

  • Set the thermostat to 68°F or as low as possible while you’re awake. Set it lower while you’re asleep or away from home.
  • Make sure rugs, drapes or furniture are not blocking airflow from vents or registers.
  • Replace your window screens with storm windows to provide an extra barrier to the cold outside air.
  • Keep draperies and blinds open on your south-facing windows during winter days to have sunlight help warm your home.
  • Make sure to close the fireplace damper, when the fireplace is not being used, so you don’t lose any warm air.
