DTE Gas is working in communities throughout Michigan to upgrade the infrastructure that delivers the natural gas you depend on every day. As part of a multi-year Gas Renewal Program (GRP), we’re replacing steel and cast-iron pipes with more efficient, durable and environmentally friendly materials. (See where we’re working at: dteenergy.com/gas-map.)

At the same time, our crews also are moving meters outside. Outdoor meters reduce the risk of natural gas leaks inside buildings and make routine safety checks and maintenance more convenient by nearly eliminating the need for a technician to enter your home or business. Also, in an emergency inside, gas can be shut off to allow first responders to safely enter the property and perform their work.

 Protecting you and your property

Our teams comply with rigorous industry and corporate standards to ensure safety during construction and, in many instances, take extra steps to protect you and your property.

  • Prior to construction, we contact MISS DIG to locate and mark underground public utilities, such as electric and communications lines, to avoid disrupting your service.
  • A crew member or contractor also will inspect your sewer line to confirm the absence of a cross bore, which occurs when a utility line is bored through a sewer or septic system line. This cross bore can pose a danger if a sewer line backup develops and a plumber attempts to clear it with a mechanical rotary device.
  • Throughout the construction process, crews may briefly shut off gas service to ensure your safety. We will attempt to notify you in advance, and when we restart your service, a crew member will relight your appliances and make sure they are operating safely.
  • After all construction is completed, concrete and landscaping crews will repair affected sidewalks, driveways and lawns. Visit dteenergy.com/repairs for details about property repairs.

Important safety reminders

  • All DTE employees and most contractors carry identification badges and are required to show their badge when asked.
  • As always, if you smell gas or suspect a leak, leave the area immediately. Once you’re in a safe place, call 911 and then call DTE’s Gas Leak Hotline at (800) 947-5000.
