At DTE Energy, we believe collaboration with local communities is key to fostering progress and development. Our crews are working in the Conner Creek Industrial and Airport Sub neighborhoods of Detroit, relocating power lines from underneath a bridge at I-94 and Conner Street to support the Michigan Department of Transportation’s ongoing efforts to modernize I-94.

We are installing nearly a mile of new underground pipe (conduit) and cable from Conner Street to St Jean/Hern Streets, then north across I-94 to Beneteau Street. Crews are also installing 1,100 feet of new overhead power lines and steel poles along Hern Street.

The new equipment is stronger and capable of supporting higher voltage power, enabling future growth and expanded electrical energy options in this area, such as electric vehicles. Customers in the area will also experience more reliable power because of the upgraded power lines, poles and electrical equipment.

This is one of six relocation projects that DTE is conducting to support MDOT’s I-94 modernization project. It is also part of DTE’s rebuilding portion of its plan to build the grid of the future: transitioning to a smart grid, upgrading existing infrastructure, rebuilding significant portions of the grid and trimming trees. This plan will help us in our commitment to reducing outages by 30% while cutting outage time in half by the end of 2029.
