Shortly after World War II, John Kent launched a small electrical contracting business in Casnovia, Michigan. He called the business Kent Electric and specialized in wiring barns, schools, and municipal buildings. He succeeded by focusing on safety and customer service and treating his employees like family.

John had three children. Years later, his youngest son purchased the company, moved it to Rockford, Michigan changed the name to Kent Power and shifted focus to outside line and substation construction.

Today the fourth-generation business continues growing as a woman owned business, and is fueled by familial culture where skills and values are passed down through generations to benefit the broader community. DTE is vital part of their story.

Kent Power is just one of more than 1,000 DTE suppliers based in Michigan. DTE has invested more than $24 billion with Michigan-based suppliers since 2010, creating or sustaining 92,000 Michigan jobs.

“Being with Kent Power for 16 years and working alongside DTE, I’ve seen our partnership evolve into something truly special,” said Jennifer Baerman, Regional Manager of Operations for Kent Power’s Gas Division. “Our partnership with DTE began with the Grand Rapids and Muskegon blanket contract in 2008. Since then, it’s been a journey of mutual growth and shared goals.”

That journey got much more complex during the COVID-19 pandemic, when Kent Power relied on DTE’s experience to uphold their commitment to safety and skill development. Baerman said DTE’s involvement in her company’s safety protocols and eagerness to offer guidance and support has strengthened the relationship.

Beyond safety, the two companies shared a commitment to technology and continual improvement. Encouraged by DTE, Kent Power transitioned to a paperless system, a significant leap toward operational efficiency.

While these shared values provide a strong foundation for business success, at its core, this partnership is about people.

“In the Grand Rapids area alone, our 14 crews are mostly local hires. We’re proud this partnership allows us to support west Michigan families,” Baerman said. “We hope to continue this partnership, growing and adapting to the community’s needs. Our relationship with DTE is more than just professional; it’s a shared journey towards empowering communities and fostering economic and business development.”
