DTE continues to be laser focused on building a stronger grid. This work takes place across our service area as crews are always inspecting more equipment and determining if upgrades are needed.

These inspections can lead to a complete overhaul of power poles in an area, with dozens or even hundreds slated to be replaced with sturdy, new equipment.

In Ann Arbor, at the intersection of Washtenaw Street and Sheridan Drive, crews have recently installed one of these brand-new steel poles. Steel poles are drastically stronger than traditional wooden poles, resulting in improved equipment performance. In addition to being made from a more durable material, these poles are also taller and installed deeper into the ground, maximizing both their strength and stability. These upgrades will improve the performance of the grid overall, especially during extreme weather situations.

Enhancing infrastructure is essential for reducing outages and strengthening grid resilience. By utilizing advanced technology, we are equipped to meet future energy demands and deliver reliable, uninterrupted service to our customers.

DTE Energy is dedicated to constructing a smarter, stronger and more resilient grid to enhance reliability. Our commitment to customers is to reduce power outages by 30% and to cut outage durations in half by the end of 2029.

Upgrading work is part of DTE’s plan to build the grid of the future. That plan, now well underway, includes transitioning to a smart grid, upgrading existing infrastructure, rebuilding significant portions of the grid and trimming trees.
