Today Governor Whitmer signed a series of energy bills designed to help the state meet ambitious clean energy goals. The package of bills signed today, in total,

  • sets clean energy and renewable energy standards,
  • boosts energy efficiency targets, and
  • expands the role of the Michigan Public Service Commission to streamline the permitting process for wind and solar developments.

As the new legislation was debated in both the Michigan House and Senate, DTE representatives in Lansing worked hard to advocate for measures to ensure the policies in this package met the needs of our customers — including achieving ambitious clean energy goals in a way that ensures affordability and reliability of the grid.

The new legislation will push the pace of decarbonization and deployment of renewables in the state in a way that generally aligns with DTE’s targets.  Importantly, the clean energy standard is technology-neutral, and provides flexibility for how we can meet the ambitious targets, which is critical. The legislation’s off-ramps are also an important feature that protects the interests of our customers. These off-ramps allow for pace adjustments should Michigan utilities encounter challenges due to affordability, supply chain or other issues.
