Frequently Asked Questions

Why do you need to replace my natural gas meter?

DTE’s natural gas meters are accurate and reliable. To ensure they remain so, all Michigan natural gas providers are required by the Michigan Public Service Commission to test natural gas meters on a regular basis. To test the meters, we need to temporarily disconnect them from service.

Is there a charge for this service?

No, there is no charge for this service.

Will my natural gas be shut off?

Yes, for a short time, while your meter is being replaced, your natural gas service will be temporarily disconnected. This allows us to also test the natural gas meter assembly and regulator. After our work is done, we will relight your appliances and conduct a free safety inspection of your piping and appliances to ensure they’re operating safely.

Do I need to be home?

An adult 18 years or older will need to be home to allow a DTE technician inside your home to relight appliances and conduct a safety inspection of your piping and appliances.

Do you need to come into my home?

Whether your meter is indoor or outdoor, after your meter is exchanged, we will need access inside your home to relight appliances and conduct a free safety inspection of your piping and appliances.

How long will a natural gas meter exchange take?

Typically, a natural gas meter exchange takes less than one hour. Occasionally, unforeseen issues may require more time to resolve. We will make every effort to restore your natural gas service as quickly as possible.

As the homeowner or renter, is there anything I need to do before you arrive?

We ask that you keep the area around the meter free from debris and/or foliage. If you have a pet, please secure them in another room. An adult 18 years or older will need to be home to allow us inside your home to relight appliances and conduct a safety inspection of your piping and appliances.

How do I know if the person at my front door is from DTE?

All our employees are required to present an official ID badge and will drive a vehicle with the DTE logo on the side of it. Your safety is important to us. Always ask to see an ID badge before allowing anyone into your home. If you are still uncomfortable, please call our office at 800.477.4747 and ask if the representative at your home is indeed an employee of DTE.
