Mothfire Brewery is redefining brewing in Ann Arbor, pairing its signature brews with a commitment to energy-efficient innovation. The brewery, founded in 2020, recently opened a new 5,000-square-foot facility where affordable and reliable natural gas and electric service were priorities, as they are essential for brewing consistent, high-quality beer.

“Our business is unique because we rely equally on electricity and natural gas to brew beer,” said David Becker, co-founder of Mothfire Brewery. “DTE understood that and moved quickly, upgrading our old electric infrastructure and installing natural gas seamlessly. That work kept our operations running without interruption and set us up to brew with confidence.”

Natural gas powers Mothfire’s boiler, which heats the water used throughout the brewing process and supplies the steam needed for tightly controlled and consistent boiling of the wort.

On the electric side, dependable service is critical to keep the tanks at a constant temperature during fermentation and for rapid cooling, dropping tanks from 68 degrees to 33 degrees. Without dependable electricity, the heat generated during fermentation could cause off-flavors, risking thousands of dollars in spoiled beer.
