DTE recently energized a new substation in Van Buren Township, marking the beginning of a new era of enhanced capacity and service reliability for homes and businesses in the area.
Substations are critical parts of the electric grid that adjust voltage levels coming from power plants to distribute electricity safely and efficiently to homes and businesses. This new substation, along with more than two miles of new poles, power lines and electrical equipment, represents a $35 million investment in Van Buren Township.
“The new substation is a critical investment to support the growing commercial and industrial demand in Van Buren Township,” Teresa Thao-Tran, manager, capital projects, said. “The added capacity will not only help keep the lights on for customers, but it also will allow us to expand electric energy options, including the adoption of electric vehicles.”
Additionally, the project will improve reliability in the area. The new substation will be equipped with smart grid technology that can reroute power to customers during an outage, reducing the number and length of power interruptions.
DTE began construction on this project in 2021 and customers will be served by the substation later this year.
Substation construction is part of DTE’s broader grid investment strategy that includes transitioning to a smart grid, upgrading existing infrastructure, rebuilding significant portions of the grid and trimming trees.
