DTE Energy is committed to building the grid of the future. One way we accomplish this is by both upgrading and rebuilding portions of the overall grid.

Whether upgrading a single pole or rebuilding infrastructure, we are committed to increased performance and reliability from our electrical equipment. In Pontiac, DTE is investing over $31 Million to rebuild the local grid. New poles, new wire, transformers, cross arms, and connectors and major substation work are all scheduled to be completed during this multi-year project. This work will greatly increase the strength and reliability of the grid throughout Pontiac.

Recently, at the corner of Howard Street and Baldwin Avenue, our crews were continuing the work for this ongoing project. Specifically, they installed a new pole and are installing new wire to go along with it. New steel poles are much more durable and reliable than their wooden pole predecessors. This will work along with the upgrades across the city to help DTE rebuild the grid in Pontiac. Together, the performance of the grid in the area will be greatly increased, especially during extreme weather situations.

Upgrading infrastructure is vital to reducing outages and bolstering grid resilience. With investments in advanced technology, we are prepared to meet future energy demands and provide reliable, consistent service for our customers.

DTE Energy is dedicated to constructing a smarter, stronger and more resilient grid to enhance reliability. Our commitment to customers is to reduce power outages by 30% and to cut outage durations in half by the end of 2029.

This rebuilding work is part of DTE’s plan to build the grid of the future. That plan, now well underway, includes transitioning to a smart grid, upgrading existing infrastructure, rebuilding significant portions of the grid and trimming trees.
