DTE Energy is building the grid of the future – one that is smarter, stronger and more resilient. As part of this work, we’re investing more than $25 million between 2025 and 2026 in Livonia to strengthen our infrastructure and deliver the electric reliability customers need and deserve.
Over the past few years, DTE Energy crews have been working throughout the city to install smart grid devices, inspect and upgrade poles and electric equipment, and trim trees. These efforts, combined with milder weather conditions, led to a 68% improvement in Livonia’s electric reliability between 2023 and 2024. And we’re not done yet – we’re still working throughout Livonia to:
Accelerate our transition to a smart grid
- We plan to fully automate the electric grid by the end of 2029 with smart devices to enhance safety and reduce outages.
- These devices identify outage damage locations and reroute power so the lights stay on while crews make repairs.
- In 2025, we have added 34 smart devices to the electric grid in Livonia.
Upgrade existing infrastructure
- We are actively inspecting and replacing power poles and pole top equipment to better withstand the increased frequency of extreme weather.
- So far this year, DTE has upgraded more than 100 miles of electrical equipment in Livonia and we plan to inspect and upgrade another 200 miles by the end of the year.
Trim or remove trees
- Nearly half the time customers spend without power is due to fallen tree branches and limbs coming into contact with our electrical equipment.
- We’ve trimmed more than 84 miles of trees in Livonia and plan to trim an additional 25 miles of trees by the end of the year.
All of this work is part of DTE’s commitment to reduce power outages by 30% and cut outage time in half by the end of 2029.
