DTE Energy continues to work hard towards building a stronger grid. Across our service territory, front-line crews are out in the field every day making improvements to our electrical grid.
This initiative to build a stronger, more reliable grid has our crews doing extensive work now in Pontiac, where we are in the process of rebuilding significant portions of the grid. At the corner of Montcalm Street and Saginaw Street, our crews have recently installed new underground cables. The new cables will be more durable and work more efficiently than the older wire being replaced. This will result in fewer outages and help with quicker restoration times should an outage occur. Together with other upgrades happening across Pontiac, the local grid will have increased performance across the board, especially during extreme weather situations.
In Pontiac, DTE is investing over $31 Million to rebuild the local grid. New poles, new wire, transformers, cross arms, and connectors and major substation work are all scheduled to be completed during this multi-year project. This work will greatly increase the strength and reliability of the grid throughout Pontiac.
DTE Energy is dedicated to constructing a smarter, stronger and more resilient grid to enhance reliability. Our commitment to customers is to reduce power outages by 30% and to cut outage durations in half by the end of 2029.
Upgrading work is part of DTE’s plan to build the grid of the future. That plan, now well underway, includes transitioning to a smart grid, upgrading existing infrastructure, rebuilding significant portions of the grid and trimming trees.
