DTE Energy is committed to reducing power outages by 30% and cutting outage durations in half by 2029. To do this, we are building the grid of the future, by focusing on transitioning to a smart grid, upgrading existing infrastructure, rebuilding significant portions of the grid and trimming trees.

As part of an ongoing rebuilding project in Richmond, we expect to deliver an estimated 90% improvement in reliability for customers served by an upgraded substation and electrical equipment. Since 2022, we have been working to modernize the infrastructure that delivers power to the Richmond area. This $56 million project includes:

  • Upgrading 30 miles of power lines, transformers and other electrical equipment.
  • Installing new steel and cement power poles with fully upgraded pole-top equipment. These new poles are stronger than the old wooden poles and can better withstand extreme weather.
  • Expanding the electric substation by adding transformers, circuit switchers and more.
  • Trimming trees. Trees and branches that fall into and damage power lines and electrical equipment account for half the time customers spend without power. Tree maintenance helps prevent and reduce outages.
Benefits

All this work will not only deliver a significant improvement in reliability, but it will also improve safety and the grid’s capacity to support growth and expand electric energy options like electric vehicles.

Recent work

Recently crews were working at the corner of 31 Mile Road and Lowe Plank Road in Richmond. From Forest Avenue to Lowe Plank Road, they installed 44 new poles, with more scheduled to be added soon. This work also includes reconfiguring power lines, installing new cross arms, transformers and other electrical equipment better made and more modern to stand up to wind and storms. This work will provide the area customers with stronger and more reliable electric service.
