DTE Energy is dedicated toward building a stronger grid. One way this is accomplished is with our front-line crews, who are in the field every day to locate and inspect pieces of our current infrastructure that may need upgrading. These inspections can result in a single pole being upgraded or even a neighborhood wide equipment overhaul.
Recently, at the corner of Somerset Avenue and Schuman Avenue in the Westland neighborhood of Norwayne, our crews were carrying out upgrades to a power pole. At this location, there is now a brand-new pole top switch, which allows the grid equipment to be operated remotely. In the case of the outage, DTE could operate from afar and reroute power to better customers and keep more lights on. This will make restoration times quicker for customers and the process safer for our crews. These types of upgrades improve the performance of the grid in the area, especially during extreme weather situations.
DTE Energy is dedicated to constructing a smarter, stronger and more resilient grid to enhance reliability. Our commitment to customers is to reduce power outages by 30% and to cut outage durations in half by the end of 2029.
Upgrading work is part of DTE’s plan to build the grid of the future. That plan, now well underway, includes transitioning to a smart grid, upgrading existing infrastructure, rebuilding significant portions of the grid and trimming trees.
