DTE Energy is dedicated to constructing a smarter, stronger and more resilient grid to enhance reliability. Our commitment to customers is to reduce power outages by 30% and to cut outage durations in half by 2029.
Part of this plan brings our crews to Detroit with the goal being to ensure that our customers here experience fewer and shorter power outages. This project is planning to install hundreds of new power poles in the area. Crews were recently at the corner of Joy Road and Howell Street in the Petoskey-Otsego neighborhood to start rolling out this work. This work will help harden the circuit there and provide a better performing grid, especially during extreme weather situations. Each new pole that is installed will also receive all the necessary pole top upgrades, such as more durable cross-arms, connectors, and new transformers.
Executing these upgrades will play a crucial part in increasing reliability in the area. Replacing this older equipment is key in our plan to build a stronger and more reliable grid. DTE will continue to do this kind of work, not only to improve reliability, but also to help with the increased demand for electricity in the years to come.
This upgrading work is part of DTE’s plan to build the grid of the future. That plan, now well underway, includes transitioning to a smart grid, upgrading existing infrastructure, rebuilding significant portions of the grid and trimming trees.
