As part of DTE Energy’s plan to build the grid of the future, we rebuilt the electric infrastructure that delivers power to southwest Ann Arbor.

This project, which DTE began in May and completed in December 2025, represents an investment of more than $3.7 million and included:

  • Rebuilding electric infrastructure: We’ve installed nearly a mile of new cable and rebuilt around three miles of infrastructure, including nearly 170 new, stronger poles. This equipment can better withstand extreme weather Conditions.
  • Tree trimming: We completed almost three miles of tree trimming to help improve reliability and reduce outages. Trimming or removing trees prevents them from falling onto electric equipment and causing power outages.
  • Connecting customers to the new electric system: Residents and businesses within the project area (see map below) have been connected to an upgraded electric substation. The upgraded substation helps ensure electricity continues to be delivered safely and more reliably as energy demand continues to grow.

This work is expected to improve reliability by up to 90% for more than 400 customers served by the upgraded substation and new equipment. This project will also improve safety and the electric grid’s capacity to meet the area’s growing energy needs—meaning the system will be able to support new businesses and more electric vehicles and appliances.

This project is part of DTE’s plan to invest $360 million to upgrade and rebuild Ann Arbor’s electric grid. You can learn more about work happening in your community at dteenergy.com/powermap.
