Grand River Ave. in Howell recently earned national acclaim for its historic charm, scenery and vibrant lighting, ranking in the top 10 most ‘charming main streets’ in the country by USA Today.

The significant buildings, unique shops and tasty restaurants are among the top reasons for receiving this recognition, but who powers this significant area – DTE Energy – is also an important part of making Grand River Ave. special.

DTE Energy owns, operates and maintains over 100 lights across Grand River Ave.

With DTE’s Community Lighting program, downtown Howell has become more welcoming and attractive to residents, visitors and businesses, helping to earn this national recognition.

“Grand River Avenue has a living history and a vibrant culture,” said community lighting manager Dan Newman. “It is truly an honor for our Community Lighting to have a part in adding to the ambiance of Grand River through our streetlight program.”

The Fantasy of Lights parade is a popular event each year in downtown Howell. DTE collaborates with the city a couple weeks prior and proactively inspects and ensures all streetlights and GFI receptacles (on streetlight posts) are working.

DTE’s Community Lighting doesn’t just play a role in the aesthetic of illuminating Grand River Ave., it also enhances the safety and security of the city.

“Outdoor lighting is critical to public safety,” said Newman. “Our team has more than 100 years of experience providing lighting solutions for streetscapes like Grand River Ave. and a safe environment for all residents and visitors.”

Whether lights are installed along roadways, at pedestrian crosswalks, in a downtown business district or near schools, DTE’s experienced team can help design a safe, effective, budget-conscious lighting solution that provides superb lighting from dusk until dawn.
